The car in a lighting test.

Take with two light sources on a box covered with a white cloth.
This is shown at an action shot as the wheels are turned to one side looking like its parked ready to drive.
The light is focused on the two facing wheels.

This is taken from right infront. also showing the controller, which parts of which you will see in the game, as a type of first person view.

Looking at filming in the green screen room, the green background would not be the right colour to use as the colour of the car is green, this wil interfear with the filming. This might work when cutting out the car from the background. As there is a definate shadow line around the car.

Pegi rating for my game.

I would think that The game that I am advertising would be in the 7+ or 12+ category as some sounds maybe loud, which could scare young children and songs may contain minor language.

This will feature on the front cove in the bottom left corner.

This game is a 12+ Due to it containing some violence and language.

All the game cases have This somewhere is the background or the cover, This Continuity unsures that it has been looked at well and constructed.

http://a2mediadanielknights.blogspot.com/2010/12/pegi-ratings.html Link to the ratings post.

PEGI ratings.

"PEGI is used and recognised throughout Europe and has the enthusiastic support of the European Commission. It is considered to be a model of European harmonisation in the field of the protection of children."

"The Pan-European Game Information (PEGI) age rating system was established to help European parents make informed decisions on buying computer games. It was launched in spring 2003 and replaced a number of national age rating systems with a single system now used throughout most of Europe, in 30 countries (Austria Denmark, Hungary, Latvia, Norway, Slovenia, Belgium, Estonia, Iceland, Lithuania, Poland, Spain, Bulgaria, Finland, Ireland, Luxembourg, Portugal, Sweden, Cyprus, France, Israel, Malta, Romania, Switzerland, Czech Republic, Greece, Italy, the Netherlands, Slovak Republic and the United Kingdom)

The system is supported by the major console manufacturers, including Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo, as well as by publishers and developers of interactive games throughout Europe. The age rating system was developed by the Interactive Software Federation of Europe (ISFE)"

This is suitable for the age range of 3 top 7. It can include fighting but purely in a "Tom and Jerry type".
It must not contain and images or sounds that can scare young children and no nudity.

Mostly the same as above but letting in some sounds or images that could scare young children. It may contain partial nudity but not in a sexual way.

Violance can be slightly stronger but towards fantacy charaters. A basic level up of the last one.

Once the image of violence (or sexual activity) reaches the level that looks the same as what would be expected in real life. More extreme bad language, the concept of the use of tobacco and drugs and criminal activities.

This is used when the images have become gross violance and or includs a type.

These are what is used to classify games.

Really interesting post and visual aids that the reader can relate to seeing upon real products. Is there any relevance of the colour's of the PEGI ratings?? would love to know. :)

I guess that the red is to do with anger and blood. Orange could show thats its getting to red but still acceptable. Green is generally seen as calm as it related to nature.

Driver: San francisco Advert board

This is an advert for the new Driver game, This is featured on a building.
The size of this advert is a lot bigger than it would be on a billboard. This uses the same image as the game cover but slightly changes is size of areas. This links with the audience as it is with this game when going out to buy it.

This shows the figure in the middle with the name and car, surrounded by white. This is very basic in terms of text and messages but will link with the target audience are more likely to know what it is.

"Driver" game covers

Here is the first title to the "Driver" series of games. This features a blue car showing to be escaping the police. Then with the black and white image of "the driver" Tanner character.
Here is the second. Following on from the last title. Again with a car and the black and red character. This gives the game cover a hard man look. You can expect what will feature in this game, and you can play as this character and become it.
The third title, again showing a car and the character. So far they all show the car and the character on the contrast of black on white, red or yellow. This is the first cover in the series to show a gun.
The fourth title, This is a completely different game and cover to the other 3, this means they can do a different game cover style. This does feature a car again running from the police. This game followed a character in two time zones as he is set to jail in the middle. The style of the game also changes as it goes from the 70's to the 2000's.
The fifth title, back on to the story of Tanner again. This game isn't out yet. Again it has the same conventions as the other covers, featuring a black and white shot of the main character and a car. This time the back of it disappearing into the San Francisco city, in his body.
This also continues on the theme of yellow, which isn't considered a mans colour.

 The main conventions are:

  • Car, in a cool action shot.
  • Figure of the man.
  • Black and a contrasting theme colour.
  • Then the name at a slight angle.
All these group together to form a story and an action packed looking game. This also informs the audience what could be done in-game and what you will get.

Stop Motion "Insert Coin"

This video was entirely created with a back cloth and hundreds of silver coins. This was made by projecting the image onto the black screen then placing the coins, taking away the projection, then taking the image and starting again.
I really like this video Because it changes from the shot of the two men then to then creating the background, the animation and then back to them.  The coins really create the effect of a 3D image on the black background.

Some random shots round the city

This is a shot taken at the forum in norwich. With the lights from the Galopers And the christmas tree forming the first area where the audience would look. Then taking in the landscape from above.
This shot Is using a longer shutter speed. Then zooming in to the galopers at the same time. This creates a warp looks as the suround is being pulled into the middle, like a vanishing point.

This shot is of mousehold, showing the road twisting and turning into the distance. With the edit of darkening the edges it feels enclosed and  forgoten.
THis last shot is of the galopers, this time looking at the forum, the light from the galopers providing a reflection on the wet ground. This is using the rule of three shot, Ground/Galorper and forum/ Sky.

Questionnaire 1

This is questionnaire 1.0
Questionnaire 1.0

A basic 6 questions focused on some of the posts I have made, e.g. Maslows theory, "game" advert and game covers.
I will put this on Facebook, and target specific people. Then any additional information needed, I will make/add to the existing questions.

Latest "Game" advert

Deals for Every Kind of Gamer

This advert sets out to show what type of gamer people are and that they can cover the range in their stores.
The types are unconventional and feature gamers that can be tactical, e.g. spilling a cup of juice on the other players lap to put them off and win the game.

I need to look at this for my project as it can involve some of these, if not all who will play the game.
All the shots are of the player, none show the actual game they are playing, bar the sound. This show that you can be these types at any game.
All show the player in the middle of the shot and with the actions following. As a result you get to see the gamer in full view and see the facial reactions. You also get to see them when they are most focused.

Phillip Toledano, The gamer portrait.

Quoting from his website :
"I’ve never been very interested in straightforward portrait photography. I often feel that it reveals nothing other than the photographer’s intentions, and a topographic record of the effects of time.
But what of hidden emotions and feelings? Characteristics that are usually secreted from the world? How do we record those?
I wondered if there was a way to unconsciously tease out aspects of people’s personality, and capture it on film. So I had them play video games.
2002"

He has taken the concept of "the gamer face" and exploded it into a portrait shot. He has taken the game away so the face is the only clue to what they could be playing or watching. Some of them are really in depth expressions that are immersed in the game.

Photography, Location and light trail tests.

Had a visit down to mousehold to take some location shots. Here are the result:
All the shots of the woodland area are of the height the 3rd person view would be. I will go down again to get the view of 1st person and what they would see.
I took this shot to resemble speed, as the edges are blurred, this was done by zooming in while the shutter speed was at 1.5 seconds. The trees frame the image to make it look enclosed and emphases speed
This Shows a possible area for stunt runs or multiple paths in a map.
Along speed straight, designed for speed but with a sharp turn at the end for braking skill.
The muddy section will test the type for car you choose.
So this is based on the skill level and experience you have had with the cars.

Also had a test at light trails with increasing the shutter speed to 2 seconds. I'm happy with the results but they are blurry, next time I'm bring a tripod. Also tested many frames at slow shutter speed to create a video.

Tony Hawk shred advert.

This advert uses the fact and the motion of what you could experience with the board in real life as it shows the house moving though the front windows.
This makes you duck and move about on your seat as you think the house is moving.

Using Tony Hawks at the end will give you the feel of being Hawk's and at his skill level of skate-boarding.
This also boosts his game, as all of his previous games has featured him in the advert. This show that he is the star of the game, he has made the game, not a company behind doors.

The target audience would be boarders or people that can't skate but would want to. Also people that inspire to be tony to see his moves.

Presentation

Light trails in video

I liked the technique of light trails in pictures and how it shows life in the darkest of places, so I wanted to see if I could use this in my film but with videos instead. I found this video on Flickr which uses this technique. Its not exactly what I'm looking for as I just wanted the lights but I can still use this.

After looking at comments, he achieved this by taking photos at the rate of 5fps, for a long time. I will be using this technique for my film or adverts.
This was done in a mid to dark location on the top of a bridge. This is how the light trails have been produced as the camera picks up the light. You would struggle to get anything in the light.
I really like the idea of how this is done, I have tried it out but with out a tripod, This is one thing I will bring to produce one of the adverts.

Monster 2010

http://www.monstersthemovie.com/

Entire film made from a handful of people and one camera. Director Gareth Edwards Started with no backing from a big Hollywood budged, just the money he got from working with the BBC.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p00c74sl
This interview Edward's takes about his start up.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00w5kt4
Take a look at the full story at 25:25 on how he made it. He also takes about lens and how he thinks that focusing on one part of the screen is better than all in focus.

I like his view on how the audience should be attracted to a spot in the shot, He uses the evidence that a fully clear background and shot with confuse the audience and with miss curtain parts. So he uses a lens on this camera to make curtain parts of the shot in focus and out of focus. He shows how he made this effect in the interview.

He was able to produce the Qulity of the CGI becuase he worked int eh BBC's CGI department, This set him up with the very basic's needed for the film.

PIXELS by PATRICK JEAN

PIXELS by PATRICK JEAN.
Uploaded by onemoreprod. - Discover more animation and arts videos.
New York invasion by 8-bits creatures !
PIXELS is Patrick Jean' latest short film, shot on location in New York.

Written, directed by : Patrick Jean
Director of Photography : Matias Boucard

I love this short video, its been around for 7 months and has got quite a liking.
I like how its animated and how things change into pixels as they get destroyed.
This would've been created using effects and editing after the filming. This would've required skill in filming and in the editing to put off the quality of his film.

I really like the use of Brake Out, to destroy the bridge, This uses of old and new combined, to say that the past still has an effect on how and the way we live in the most modern of city's.
The combination of Tetris and Pac Man also to combine with the game play of getting lines (Floors in the tower block) and eating dots (subway stations)Represents how some people can relate shapes and designs to games and media.
This video will be targeted at many many people as the use of arcade games with the aspect of Pixel monsters taking over the world hits the old and young people, this is how this video has done so well, the mirage of the two aspects involves generations.

Maslow's hierarchy of needs

This theory can be linked to help advertising in media.
A blog post on how media can be linked to the many stages of Maslow's theory.
This website is very good at describing how these adverts have used the 5 levels.
I will be looking at this to see how I could improve the adverts I product for the game.

This is a revised table showing Maslow's table but againsted the Social media table that someone has produced.

Xbox adverts

I do like the consept of some Xbox adverts. They tend to not feature the product untill the end. This then creates a sence for what it is being advertised. also showing the fun that can be had and the sillyness of how you look but it doesn't matter because these people are doing it on tv.

Car trouble!

At the moment the nitro RC car I will be using to film the advert and use in the media texts has broken down. "Flying point racing probe 2000".
This is due to many reasons;
  1. It is very old by about 20 years. Which is alot in the RC car manufactures.
  2. The nitro fuel I bought at 16% nitro was too much, burning out the clutch and the engine off revv's too much. It is used to 5%.
  3. When I tested it in the summer holidays, which was when the clutch went. It flipped, maybe damaging the engine and it hit the ground at a funny angle.
  4. Now the engine isn't tuned to the nitro fuel so it over revvs and stalls as it trys to move with out controling it.
At the minute it is trying to be fixed. The hard part is that the company that made it doesn't exist anymore. Meaning nor do the spare parts.
I do have a back up plan which doesn't mean filming the car moving, Which I can use if it doesn't get fixed.

This is to have the car still, With the background moving behind it, With single shots of different terrain, like a spinning wheel of pictures.
This will still advertise the game as to show what you can expect in the game its self.

On a sidenote..

In my spare time I volunteer For the Whitwell and Reepham station, This is a group that has come together to restore a station.

I do many tasks for the group, one is making video updates on YouTube.
http://www.youtube.com/user/WhitwellandReepham
I take, edit and upload the video as well as advertise it in many railway related places.

This has helped me to learn the basics of editing and uploading to the Internet. Taking the photo's I have learnt to get the most out of the picture to document the Changes and new arrivals.
I use the editing program Magix pro 12, Which me and a friend won from coming first place in a short clay mation video contest. I find this very easy to use and it is enabled to upload straight to YouTube from saving. As I am used to this program Its possible that I will use it to edit my adverts.

http://hellesdonandcitystation.webs.com/

I also set up a free website for another project I'm involved in, Me and a group of friends are planning on cleaning up two old stations as they have reached a point where you cant see thin in the under growth. This was set up to advertise and bog updates on the project in junction to our flickr group.

This free website site was very easy to use and create. I did set up with another free website, moonfruit.com but I found this to confusing for a first time Weber.

Time is a crucial thing as editing and editing videos can take up a lot of time. This has helped me gain alot of experience in time keeping with this sort of thing.

A simple Idea for a magazine adea.

This first plan is a design that will take up 2 full pages. This will be in a selected games magazine like playstation magazine. The first page will be some where at the start. Then the second one will be near to the end as this links to a race. The first picture show the car in a perfectly white room and a very clean car. Then the second will be after the race and will still be in the perfectly white background but will have had mud all thrown at the walls to show that the car has been in the race. Then there will be a slogan, like the one above.
This will be made by taking the RC car before and afrter filming the advert.

Advertising has changed alot recently, Its become alot more below the line. Which is what this advertisment is sharing in.

Racing game Genre's and Chiches.

Taken from this website based on video game chiches. I found about racing game chiches.

Racing Game Clichés

Racing is racing, right? Well, racing games have their own conventions and clichés. Can you think of any others? How would you break stereotypes and create a racing game that was different from all the others?

  • You start off with a horrible car.
  • Cars don't take damage (in arcade-type racing games, anyway).
  • Instant respawn after crashing.
  • You run out of time, not fuel.
  • You always do laps.
  • Rubber-band AI.
  • Your only goal is to finish first and progress.
  • Upgrade parts and buy new cars.
  • You can't do anything else but race.
  • You can't leave your car.
  • Your car never breaks down.
  • Going off track or getting spun around slows you down considerably.
  • Cars vary in predictable ways -- handling, top speed, acceleration, and sometimes durability.
This page from a game design book describes how they create the illusion of racing though the POV,(point of view).
Link to the page

wikipedia on Racing video games,  This describes the the two main types of driving game.
And gives a major list of all the driving games that have been on sale in the genre.
  • "Simulation style racing games strive to convincingly replicate the handling of an automobile. They often license real cars or racing leagues, but will use fantasy cars built to resemble real ones if unable to acquire them. Vehicular behavior physics are a key factor in the experience. The rigors of being a professional race driver are usually also included (such as having to deal with a car's tire condition and fuel level). Proper cornering technique and precision racing maneuvers (such as drafting) are given priority in the simulation racing games."
  • "Arcade style racing games put fun and a fast-paced experience above all else, as cars usually compete through odd ways. A key feature of arcade racers that specifically distinguishes them from simulation racers is their far more liberal physics. Whereas in real racing (and subsequently, the simulation equivalents) the driver must reduce their speed to take most turns, arcade racing games generally encourage the player to try to take turns as fast as possible (most arcade racers include a "powerslide" maneuver to allow the player to keep up their speed by drifting through a turn rather than slowly entering it). Collisions with other racers, track obstacles, or traffic vehicles is usually much more exaggerated than simulation racers as well. For the most part, arcade racers simply remove the precision required from the simulation experience and focus strictly on the racing element itself. They often license real cars and leagues, but are equally open to more exotic settings and vehicles. Races take place on highways, windy roads, or in cities; they can be multiple-lap circuits or point-to-point, with one or multiple paths (sometimes with checkpoints), or other types of competition, like demolition derby, jumping, or testing driving skills. Popular arcade racers are the Daytona USA series, the Rush, the Ridge Racer series, the Cruis'n Series, the Midnight Club series, and the classic Out Run. "
You can get many types of the racing game.
  1. Arcade
  2. Time trials
  3. Acton
  4. Stunts
  5. Circut
  6. Modifacation
  7. On / Off road
  8. Air
  9. Water
  10. Speed
  11. Simulation
Many of these can be combined to cover a greater audience.
